Description
A cast bronze staff used by Ogboni cult members as a symbol of membership, as well as an image AND representation of the god Edan in physical form. When a new member joins the cult, he or she is given an edan to represent the expectation of secrecy from all cult members; the staff remains in the member's possession till death. This old bronze measures 7 inches tall and will include a wooden base with old collection numbers on the back. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, West Africa. Provenance: A Private New Jersey collection.
