Description
A Rare Old carved wooden divination idol knwon by the tribe as "kakishi". Such idols are used to carry out a form of divination practice by the Luba known as "Kashekesheke". Essentially, this is a ritual for communicating with the ancestors whose presence it is believed impacts upon the lives of the living. To begin the divination ritual, The diviner will pronounce an honorary praise phrase and the kakishi will be placed on a mat between the diviner and client. Then the diviner and client will both make contact with the kakishi by grasping it with their first two fingers. After contact has been made with the spirit, the diviner will ask questions to determine the root of her client’s misfortunes. Movement indicates the spirit’s response. This Idol has a well handled surface and a wonderful stylized form. The figure measures 6.5 inches tall ( 7.5 inches tall on base) Provenance: Ex Jean Pierre Hallet collection, noted author and adventurer
