Description
A very rare and important large scale shrine sculpture of a Mother and her children, shown seated with infant feeding on her lap as well as two other figures on either side of the mother figure. The sculpture was painted with kaolin clay pigments and accented with black paint. A substantial sculpture, the figure measures 25.5 x 18 x 9 inches and was likely part of a family shrine to pray for fertility, protection for the family and perhaps ancestor worship. Ibibio peoples, Nigeria, West Africa. Provenance: Ex William Wright Gallery, 1980s, Ex Eugene Netzer collection, New York, Ex Private New Jersey collection.
