Item Details

Description

A well weathered male effigy with wide open mouth, hands carved resting on the abdomen , central cavity carved out of the torso on one side and deep weathered surface patina suggesting great age. The figure is decorated with raised scar designs and large oval eyes. Boki or possibly Mbembe peoples, Cross river region, Nigeria, West Africa. The figure has been custom mounted and measures 17 inches tall ( 18.5 inches on base). Provenance: Ex William Wright Gallery 1980's, New York, Ex Merton Simpson Gallery 1990s, NYC.

Condition

Well weathered and worn, what remains is quite solid.
