Description
This carved wooden male effigy represents an idealized portrait of a Hemba Singiti ancestor, such sculptures commemorated important deceased chiefs and important members of the tribe to recall their past deeds. The figure embodies the composure, status, and wisdom of a respected elder. As a medium between the living and the dead, it was preserved with other such objects on an ancestral shrine. The sculpture has a well handled deep patina suggesting great age and field use. Hemba peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa. The Figure measures 15 inches tall ( 17.75 inches on custom base). Provenance: Carl and Wilma Zabel, New York.
