A carved wooden tray with ornate incised and raised designs and the face of Eshu on top, in this case with a tobacco pipe. An opon Ifá is a divination tray used in traditional Yoruba ritual. The meaning of the term Ifá, refers to the great consulting oracle. This board measures 16.5 x 10 inches, with inventory numbers painted on the back. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Provenance: The Merton Simpson Collection, New York, Also Ex Ernst and Ruth Anspach, New York and lastly a private NYC collection.
