Description
A Large heavy carved wooden door with a Fish motif carved in low relief and undeniable weathered surface and patina , well worn attachment "hinges" suggest years of traditional Use. Wooden doors known as Anuan, adorned with human, animal, and plant motifs, were once produced by Baule carvers to embellish entrances to public and private spaces such as courtyards and rest houses. Early 20th century. Baule peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. The Door measures 54 1/4 inches tall x 22 inches wide. Provenance: Kenneth Brown collection, Washington DC, and reportedly Merton Simpson Gallery NYC.
