Description
A Finely carved box with tight fitted lid and featuring raised and incised designs. Boxes such as these were for storing tukula, a reddish powder made from the bark of a tree. It was used for body and hair coloring and used to decorate the face and chest during dances, as well as to anoint bodies for burial. This Box measures 10 inches across. Kuba peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa. Provenance: The Leonard Kahan Gallery, NYC, 1980's
