Description
Native American, Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Acoma Pueblo, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful piriform pottery jar, covered in a ground of gray-white pigment, bearing intricate linear and geometric decorations in hues of black and orange-red. Acoma potters would ultimately embrace horror vacui (literally, "the fear of empty space") in their designs, which was not only commercially successful - complexity equals value is a simple enough formula - but also aesthetically distinct from the work that preceded it, as evidenced in this beautiful vessel. Size: 10.25" Diameter x 8.6" H (26 cm x 21.8 cm)
