Description
A very fine old carved wooden mask from the Bamun peoples, Cameroon, West Africa. With a wonderful stylized face and coiffure as well as a wonderful layered surface suggesting many years or ceremonial use as a dance mask. Such masks were worn by the Bamun / Bamileke peoples atop the head with a textile mask covering the face. The mask measures 13 x 10 inches.Ex Leonard Kahan Collection, NY, Noted African Art expert. Ex Prof. Charles Bordogna collection, New Jersey. Professor Charles Bordogna served as curator of the SMA Fathers African Art Museum in tenafly , NJ from 1982 until 1996. Bordogna is the author of several publications on African Art, including "Masks of Liberia", " A Tanzanian Tradition" and "Surfaces: Ritual Application on African Sculpture" (Co-authored with Leonard Kahan, P.Imperato, D. Page) as well as other text's.
