Description
This is a very rare example from the Lega peoples,Shabunda region, Democratic Republic of the Congo, central Africa. A lukungu mask never worn on the face or body , traditionally the mask only came out during Kindi initiations. On the death of an initiate, the lukungu was placed on the grave, and then passed to a nephew entitled to inherit it. This type of mask was never handled by women. The mask measures 6.5 inches tall. Provenance: Ex George Cemenche collection, New York, also a private NYC collection. The Shell is Pelomadusa Subrufa and not an endangered species.
