Provenance:

"My father was contacted by a Presidential staff member while he was working at the Irvine Coast Country Club as the greens keeper. He was asked to design and oversee the construction of President Nixon's golf course on the grounds of the Western White House in San Clemente, CA. He accepted the opportunity and eventually became the overseer of the entire grounds at the president's estate.

The golf ball was given to me after a round of golf at The Western White House. It was the usual practice that after the last putt on the 9th hole Mr. Nixon would give his ball to whomever he was playing with, that is how this ball along with many others. The ball was actually used by president Nixon during a round of golf at The Western White House in San Clemente, CA.

The broken tee was used by Mr. Nixon as well. I picked it up after a tee shot.

Stephen E. Dull."

Richard Nixon started golfing as Vice President, taking the lead from his golf-obsessed presidential running mate Dwight D. Eisenhower. By all accounts, Nixon was a proficient golfer. His personal best was 79, with a typical handicap of 12.

Between 1969 and 1980, the Nixons lived at La Casa Pacifica, a cliff-side property located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The 10-room Mission Style mansion had been constructed in 1926 and had extensive grounds. The Orange County Golfing Friends of the President paid for a private 9-hole golf course to be designed, constructed, and maintained for the president's use. Nixon frequently worked at his Western White House during his presidency, even receiving foreign heads of state here.
