Moshe Sharett, Israel’s Second Prime Minister, Writes a 7 Page Letter in Hebrew, Incredible Content!

Autograph letter signed “Moshe”, 7p., 7.75” x 9.75”. London, England, May 9 and 10, 1922. The letter was written from the London School of Economics, where he was a student after serving as an interpreter for the Turkish army during WWI. He writes the letter while “attending the Lesson of Geography”. He writes to a friend, and a fellow member of the Leaders of the Yishuv, leaders of the Jewish population living in Palestine. Slight browning and foxing present throughout, third page is waterstained rendering it only partly legible, paper clip mark on first page, and marginal tears. Very good condition.


Sharett lists nine subjects, the most important being the future first president of Israel, Chaim Weizmann (1949-1952). Moshe writes, “Chaim came here last week full of hopes, sure that the League of Nations will approve the Mandate… Left to Geneva, the session starts on 11 May… Balfour will preside, all is ready. I think that the Mandate will be a… Balfour Declaration…”. The Balfour Declaration gave the support of the British government to the establishment of a national homeland for Jewish people in Palestine. He also talks about “the Mandate”, the British Mandate for Palestine, which was approved by the League of Nations on July 24, 1922, just two months after this letter was written. The Mandate gave Britain control over the area now Israel and Jordan, which was used to start a Jewish homeland.


In the letter, Moshe writes on other subjects such as Herbert Samuel, the British first High Commissioner of Palestine who oversaw the Mandate, and Pinhas Putenberg (whom he refers to as Pini), who formed the American Jewish Congress and the Jewish Legion, as well as helping to define the British and French areas of interest regarding the Mandate of Palestine. Sharett discusses other topics in his letter, such as general news, the press and personal details. The last three pages are additions to the aforementioned subjects and written on the next day, May 10.
