G.B. Shaw Superb Large Signed Photo


Very fine signed photograph of George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), the British playwright, author, and critic, seated in the study of Shaw's Corner, his home in Hertfordshire after 1906. On the lower left mount, Shaw has inscribed: "This is my celebrated performance as a genial and charming old man. 'Blessings on his kindly voice and on his silver hair.' And Hoppe pretending to be taken in. G.B.S." The silver albumen sepia colored photograph measures 7.25" x 7.75". Matted and framed behind UV filtering Plexiglas within a mahogany finished and gilt frame. Not examined out of frame. Overall size measures 14.5" x 17.25".


"Hoppe" referred to the celebrated portrait photographer Emil Otto Hoppé (1878-1972), who appears facing Shaw in the photo. Hoppé photographed such early twentieth-century literary notables as T.S. Eliot, H.G. Wells, Ezra Pound, and A.A. Milne. The popular photographer also captured likenesses of the British Royal family, and Vaslav Nijinsky and the corps of the Ballets Russes.
