Sheridan Philip
P.H. Sheridan Writes to First Lady, Rose Cleveland
Bi-fold autograph letter signed, 4.25" x 5.5". Dated "February 16, 1886", and signed by Commanding General Philip Henry Sheridan as "P.H. Sheridan". Penned to the first and last page with internal pages left blank. Fine condition with strong vibrant inks. Accompanied by the original autographed envelope, 5.5" x 3.5". Small faded stain to envelope else near fine.
A lovely letter written by P.H. Sheridan to "Rose Elizabeth Cleveland" on behalf of his wife, sending her thanks for the "nice invitation". Sheridan conveyed her regrets that she could not attend due to illness.
Written toward the end of Sheridan's long illustrious career, Sheridan died only 2 years after this letter. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with General-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces under General Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called "The Burning" by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. In 1865, his cavalry pursued General Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox.
