Greek, Magna Graecia, South Italic, Apulian, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A large wheel-thrown pottery drinking mug, referred to as an olpe, with a wide mouth and flared rim, single applied strap handle, a bulbous body, and a stable circular footed base. A reflective and silvery black glaze covers most of the exterior of the vessel and ends just before the base, though the glaze ceases just below the inside of the rim leaving the uncolored interior clay surface visible. A rotund and excellent example! Size: 4" W x 4.75" H (10.2 cm x 12.1 cm).
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
