Description
**First Time At Auction**
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A black-glazed pottery guttos (oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a single conical spout ending in a slightly flared rim, a ring-form handle attached at the shoulder, and a rimmed fill hole. The exterior walls are lightly scalloped. A guttos like this example would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to fill oil lamps. Size: 4.75" L x 4" W (12.1 cm x 10.2 cm).
Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-Bonhams London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 14; ex-private English collection of an academic, acquired between 1950 to 1975

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, small nicks and fading to exterior color and glazing, and minor nicks to base, otherwise intact and very good. Two very old collection stickers on the base.
