Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 325 BCE. A black-glazed ceramic guttos (oil pouring vessel) with a round body and a single, tall, trumpet-shaped spout, a ring-like handle attached to the shoulder, lightly ribbed body, and a circular, concave disc on the top encircled by a pair of concentric decorative raised rings. In the center of the disc is a fine relief rendering of Nike astride a bull. Nike, the goddess of victory, is here depicted with large wings, topless, wearing a flowing skirt. Mythological subjects are common on everyday items from the Greek world, and we can imagine that the ancient Greeks may have had preferences and favorites that they chose when purchasing these mold-made items. Size: 4.8" W x 3.75" H (12.2 cm x 9.5 cm)
