Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. A classic blackware guttus (or guttos) form with a rounded, ribbed body, a single loop handle, and a high spout with a funnel mouth, all on a raised, tiered spool foot. The tondo is decorated in low relief scene depicting a griffin, an amalgam creature with eagle wings, a lion's head, and curved horns, rearing its front legs and open mouth into the air. The vessel is covered in a jet-black glaze, and scattered areas of faint iridescence complement the lustrous color. Size: 4.75" W x 3" H (12.1 cm x 7.6 cm).
