Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. A lovely blackware guttus (or guttos) form with a rounded body, a single loop handle, and a projecting spout with a funnel mouth, all upon a raised, tiered spool foot. The tondo is decorated in low relief with an elegant female face defined by almond eyes, a bulbous nose, rounded cheeks, and spiraling bangs of hair beneath a veil. The vessel is covered in a jet-black glaze, and scattered areas of earth-filled craquelure give the exterior a pop of color. Size: 5.125" W x 4.25" H (13 cm x 10.8 cm).
