Description
Greek, colony of Campania, southwestern Italy, ca. 340 BCE. Quite fine pottery askos, a vessel used to hold perfumes and precious oils in the bath. Of a rather unusual form with the lower body almost identical to the body one would normally see on a guttos, with short foot, wide midsection decorated with thin ribs. A small loop handle and flaring spout with slightly concave rim emerges from the center of the vessel. Entire vessel covered in black lead-based glaze save small band above the foot left reserved. A very sweet example of South Italic pottery! Size: 4" W x 4.25" H (10.2 cm x 10.8 cm)
