Description
Magna Graecia, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. An attractive blackware spool-shaped lidded pyxis, the lid decorated with a relief bust of a goddess, perhaps Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, surrounded by and incised flower with skillfully delineated petals. The vessel body sits upon a pedestaled, concave base and was most likely used to store cosmetics. How fitting given the depiction of a goddess - particularly the goddess of love and beauty - on the lid! Size: 4" W x 3.875" H (10.2 cm x 9.8 cm)
