Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful blackware kantharos with a voluminous body, twin handles, and a short splayed foot. The vessel is nice and deep with two distinct high handles at opposing sides and a subtly flared rim. Impressed opposing chevron motifs arranged in two registers adorn the lower "belly" and the lower edge of the upper section, with palmettes further punctuating the upper register. Images of kantharoi (Greek for dung beetle) were oftentimes depicted in the hands of Dionysos and Herakles on black and red figure vases. Size: 6" W from handle end to handle end x 3.375" H (15.2 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection, acquired in 1980's.
