Greece, South Italy/Magna Graecia, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A squat jug with a wide, flared neck. The bifurcated handle rises from the shoulder to the edge of the rim. The piece sits on a flat, round, slightly rolled foot. It is glazed in a deep, glossy black that has attained a beautiful iridescence. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 3.7" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 9.4 cm)
