Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, ca. 325 BCE. A black-glazed pottery guttos (oil pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat rounded form with a single diagonal spout, a ribbed, ring-like handle attached to the upper wall, and a circular strainer on the top surrounded by a raised wall. A pair of concentric, decorative raised rings mark the shoulder. A guttos like this example would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to fill oil lamps. Size: 4.55" L x 5.1" W x 3" H (11.6 cm x 13 cm x 7.6 cm)
