Magna Graecia, South Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful ceramic kothon (also called a plemochoe or exaleiptron) with a sinuous loop handle just below the rounded rim, all on a ring base. Adding to its attractive form is the beautiful painted decorative program of chocolate brown and red narrow concentric circular bands on a cream hued ground as well as a target pattern on the underside of the base. Such vessels were essentially ancient air fresheners created to contain fragrant substances to imbue a space with sweet smelling aromas. Size: 7.125" W x 2.125" H (18.1 cm x 5.4 cm)
