Description
Southern Italy, Greek period, ca. 4th century BCE. This is a pottery kalathos, a wool bucket, painted with bands of black, cream, and red pigment, with a flat base and evenly flaring sides. In addition to being a utilitarian object the kalathos was also a potent symbol of fertility and abundance. For example, illustrations on vases from Southern Italy at this time use the kalathos to symbolize a future marriage. Size: 6.8" W x 4.5" H (17.3 cm x 11.4 cm)
