Description
Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 BCE. Lovely pottery olpe decorated in red-figure with Eros, the Greek god of love (his Roman counterpart being Cupid), walking right, holding grape cluster in his left hand, garland in his right, wings outstretched behind. Eros was the son of Aphrodite, whose mischievious exploits inspired bonds of passion to manifest. The artist of this piece capitalized on the red-figure technique's allowance for the subtleties of figural movement and detail. A very nice example! Size: 6-1/2" H.
