Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A finely preserved blackware pottery jar depicting a highly stylized llama or alpaca with bent legs in relief, a thick neck, and a perky tail. The bulbous ovoid vessel has a round but stable base and a cylindrical spout emanating from the top. The head is wrapped with a rope halter around the thick snout and over the perked ears. This effigy vessel may have been a funerary offering, a practical substitute for a live or sacrificed animal since camelids were much more valuable alive as they provided wool for weaving and were dependable pack animals. Size: 4.5" W x 7.4" H (11.4 cm x 18.8 cm)

Condition
One lengthy pressure fissure radiating across the front and side of body as shown. Chips and small loss to spout rim, and abrasions to head, and tail. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
