Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Magna Graecia, Apulia, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-formed pottery bird, dove-like in appearance. The hollow effigy sits, wings folded to sides, resting on the body and tail base, with the feet pointing out from under the breast. A groove runs up the tail and shallow furrows indicate the feathers along the sides. The long neck rises up and rounds off with the head and a short beak. White and gray pigment remains on the front from the feet to the beak. Doves were used in religious ceremonies in Greco-Roman religions. Priests known as augurs studied the flight, species, feather color, and time of day in relation to bird sightings in order to divine the future. This pottery piece was perhaps a votive offering used in a shrine for the goddess Fortuna to ensure good fortune. Size: 4.25" L x 2" W x 2.5" H (10.8 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired 1970s to 2000s
