Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely leaded bronze figurine of the Graeco-Roman god Serapis, crowned by a modius - a headdress in the form of a grain measure - and draped in the billowing folds of a toga. His stern face is framed by leonine mane of a coiled coiffure and thick beard, as he stands raising his left arm upward, a traditional pose of the god. Ancient Romans did not typically respect the deities and belief systems of other ancient cultures; however, those in the Greek and Egyptian pantheons were revered. The god Serapis was originally created by Ptolemy I of Egypt as a means of unifying the Grecian and Egyptian cultures around the 3rd century BCE, though Romans were quick to adopt the cult of Serapis in favor of other overarching deities such as Osiris around the 4th century CE. Size: 0.8" W x 1.7" H (2 cm x 4.3 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Serapis was a Graeco-Egyptian god who first appeared around the time of Alexander the Great. Serapis was a god created by the fusion of Egyptian and Greek culture and later adopted into Roman religion. He possesses a combination of the attributes of the Egyptian god Osorapis (himself a composite of Osiris and Apis) with the attributes of a number of Greek gods including Zeus, Hades, Helios, and Dionysus. The god Ammon is usually shown with the horns of a ram and was first worshipped by Libyan desert tribes. Scholars believe that he was possibly related to Ba'al Hammon, a god of Semitic peoples such as the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. However, this has not been proven. The cult was eventually taken over by the Egyptians, who associated Ammon with their supreme god Amun.
