Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fairly unique Igbo helmet mask used in the Okperegede Masquerade. The mask bears the hallmarks of Igbo carving - the shape of the face and the dramatic coiffure - but has some unique touches, probably added because each mask is uniquely shaped by individual artisans. The mask is painted white, with black outlines around the eyes and ears and red details on the mouth and forehead. The Okperegede Masquerade is when dancers - all men - portray the reunion of the living community and their ancestors. Size: 5" W x 8.7" H (12.7 cm x 22.1 cm)
Provenance: ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
