Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio or Igbo, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden face mask of an ovoid form most likley used for entertainment. The mask depicts a rather somber visage with a deep red complexion and some areas of applied silver pigment as well, a black coiffure with one incised diagonal to the side painted white, downward curving eye slits, a protruding forehead and aquiline nose adorned with green pigment, pairs of vertical marks painted in black upon the cheeks, and a petite closed mouth with silvery, red lips. Overall, a very emotive presence! Size: 5.25" W x 9.25" H (13.3 cm x 23.5 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, Nick Poolos collection, acquired prior to 1970

Perforations on periphery for attaching ornaments and/or costume. Small holes mid forehead presumably for attachments as well. Otherwise minor surface wear as shown.
