Description
Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a fun example of one of the Ogoni "elu" (spirit) masks,cane wood masks with white-painted faces, narrow eyes, prominent noses and ears, and exaggerated mouths. This example has a big, toothy grin, and elaborately done hair, possibly with a beard. Darker marks on the face indicate tattooing or scarification. Size: 6.2" W x 9.2" H (15.7 cm x 23.4 cm)
