West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A handsome antelope karikpo mask, hand-carved from a single piece of wood with beautiful spiraling horns. The face is elongated with a pointed snout, ovoid eye holes, and piercings around the rim to attach the mask to the wearer or to a costume. The lengthy horns spiral to pointed tips and help envision the majestic antelope. Karikpo masks are traditionally used early in the agricultural season as a primary figure in ceremonies that honor the local founding ancestor. Size: 33" L x 5.675" W (83.8 cm x 14.4 cm)

Condition
Stable pressure cracks. Old inactive insect cavities on nose. Chips and nicks around eyes and high pointed areas. Modern wire on verso for suspension. Nice patina to wood.
