Description
**First Time At Auction**

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba culture, ca. early 20th century. A tall, abstract, hand-carved wooden mask. It features very deeply cut, rectangular eyes underneath a heavy brow and a long, pronounced, cross-shaped nose; rounded ears are above the eyes. Dabs of brilliant blue paint are at the sides of the eyes and on the bridge of the nose and there is white pigment on the forehead. Thick, woven string is wrapped through two round holes on either side of the face, allowing the mask to be secured. Size: 21.5" H (54.6 cm)

Provenance: the late Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970
