Description
West Africa, Liberia or Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large carved wood mask from the Dan peoples of Western Africa. The striking visage is comprised of a prominent nose, puffy lips with a few matchstick-style "stitches," slit eyes, an arching brow line, and a wide forehead. The periphery is lined with dozens of perforations from which large textile costumes can be suspended. The top of the mask is capped by a tightly-braided panel of hair, with a pair of slender bangs cascading across the sides, all coated in a thick layer of desiccated mud. Masks like this example were used to represent native spirits which lived in the jungles, and are considered by many in Dan culture to be protective objects with oftentimes sacred symbolism. A wonderful and large example! Size: 5.5" W x 8.75" H (14 cm x 22.2 cm).
