Western Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely-crafted, hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic face mask. The intense visage is comprised of slit-form eyes, a petite nose, triangular ears, full lips, and an articulated mandible attached with two strands of knotted reed strips. Two tufts of "hair" extend from the upper rim of the broad brow line, and the remainder of the coiffure projects skyward in a thick, conical column. The verso has been carved out for wear, and a lustrous brown patina envelops the majority of the exterior. Size: 15.75" H (40 cm).

Condition
Expected age-commensurate surface wear, light abrasions and nicks to ears, nose, mouth, and coiffure, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and brown patina throughout.
