Description
Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio, ca. early 20th century CE. A carved wooden mask from the Ibibio peoples of the region between the Niger River Delta and the Cross River. This is one of the two major masks that appear in Ibibio ceremonies. Called a Mfon, it has an articulated jaw and represents a beautiful spirit who has successfully procured eternal bliss. This example boasts incised hair neatly combed away from the forehead as well as stylized sideburns of a similarly "combed" appearance, dramatically wide, slit eyes lined in a darker pigment, a pointed upturned nose, small ears, and full heart shaped lips. The moveable jaw is attached to the head at both left and right via cords comprised of fibers. A fine example! Size: 5.5" W x 7.25" H (14 cm x 18.4 cm)
