Item Details
Description
West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, or Guinea, Dan peoples, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A dramatic and beautiful example of a "mask" (made to be worn atop the head rather than over the face), with the classic Dan features of a high, domed forehead, a concave face, and a protruding mouth and cheekbones. This mask also has the two horn-like protrusions, which may relate to the so, or red antelope, whose masks often sport horns. The masks are inhabited by spirits during ritual dances and are kept safe in sacred huts. Size: 4.75" W x 9.5" H (12.1 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Peter Arnovick collection, Los Altos, CA
