Description
**First Time At Auction**
Western Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large carved wooden mask from the Dan people known as a Kagle (or spirit mask). The mask has a border of perforated holes used to fasten a large flowing costume, and has a lateral front-facing protrusion on either side of slit-shaped eyes comprised of parallel metal strips. A large nose, petite mouth, and a curved forehead complete the obverse features, while the reverse has been carved out for wear in ritual ceremonies. A coating of light-brown patina envelops the surface. Size: 9.25" H (23.5 cm).
Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970

Condition
Small chips and losses to carved details, and minor oxidation to metal eye strips. Age-commensurate surface wear, small hairline fissures in multiple places, with light brown patina and earthen deposits throughout.
