West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden Maiden Spirit (Agbohbho mmwo) mask with delicate features and wonderful coloration. Her gentle visage is comprised of curved, slit-form eyes, a petite nose, cupped ears, full lips, and an incised coiffure. Her face displays hues of gold and tangerine, with ruby highlights on her mouth, and jet black hair. The Igbo are best known for these Maiden Spirit masks which are danced by men at agricultural festivals as well as funerals of important members of the village, intended to capture the purity, youth, grace, and beauty of deceased maidens. Size: 6.5" W x 9" H (16.5 cm x 22.9 cm).
