Description
Apulian, 5th-3rd century BC. A ceramic blackware lidded pyxis with integrally moulded faux handles to the shoulder and neck; the lid with radiating black strokes, central rings; the jar with palmettes beneath the handles, radiating black strokes to the shoulder, two profile ladies of fashion between scrolled tendrils. 110 grams, 82mm (3 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his grandfather in the 1920s; thence by descent.
