Description
Magna Graecia, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A ceramic pyxis, the lower section with a convex flange and a concave foot, the separate lid with a beautiful high relief bust of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and her son Eros, the youthful winged god of desire, surrounded by a band of ivy leaves created via fugitive creamy pink pigment followed by a band of radiating frets on the flange. The goddess wears an attractive stephane or bridal crown, and a veil falls just over her left shoulder. Eros endearingly peaks out from behind her right shoulder. The lower section presents a spool form with a wide flange tapering to a petite foot. Size: 6.25" in diameter x 5" H (15.9 cm x 12.7 cm)
