A war-dated autograph letter signed by George Clinton as Governor of New York. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 7", Poughkeepsie, New York, dated December 23, 1779. Addressed to an unidentified recipient and signed "Geo Clinton." Clinton details actions to be taken in negotiating the release of prisoners. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Clinton. The letter has been tipped into a slightly larger sheet, with professional restorations to edges and margins just touching the text. Light scattered foxing and soiling. Large and bold signature.

Reading in part:
"I have forwarded the original to Genl. Schuyler & I have requested of him in conjunction with yourself to take such steps as you shall judge most likely to effect an Exchange of the Prisoners taken by the Enemy at Cherry Valley. I beg therefore that you will as soon as possible wait on the General for his Advice & Assistance in this Business. I have also addressed a letter to the Commissioners in Albany to afford you every Aid in their Power..."

He kindly adds a postscript informing the recipient, "I heard from your family a few Days since - they are all well."

George Clinton (1739-1812) served in a colonial militia during the French and Indian War, and later in the Continental Army while serving his first stint as 1st Governor of New York between 1777-1795. The New York trained lawyer later reprised the governorship between 1801-1804. He also served as Vice-President of the United States under both the Jefferson and Madison administrations. Along with John C. Calhoun, he is the first of two vice presidents to hold office under two consecutive presidents.
