1865 CIVIL WAR Letter About The CAPTURE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS While Being Dressed as a Woman !
May 22, 1865-Dated, Extensive 4 page, Great Content Historic Civil War Handwritten Letter, sent from a Sarah M. Potter to her cousin Eber, dated at Gowanda, New York, writing of the Capture of Jefferson Davis being captured and "disguising himself as a woman to save his life", Fine.
This CAPTURE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS being Dressed as a Woman measures about 5" x 8", has great content, writing of the capture of Jefferson Davis being captured and "disguising himself as a woman to save his life", and of his being accused of Assisting in the Assassination of president Abraham Lincoln. The content is certainly worth much more, yet it is lightly handwritten. It reads, in part:
"Cousin Eber, ---- I think the great Southern Confederacy has taken a prodigious fall since last I wrote. To think of its tyrannical leader disguising himself a a woman to save his life and now accused of assisting in the assassination of Mr. Lincoln. Truly 'ever the right come uppermost ever is justice done', and Jeff Davis may find it true yet, but I sometimes think that the deepest revenge which could be heaped upon him would be the punishment of living until he fully realized the depth of his sin, and... stinging his soul with misery. He has been the cause of more grief than tongue can express or mind comprehend. No mere bodily suffering can erase the black wrong from our memory, neither can mental suffering; yet he may strive to repair the wrong..."
The condition in lightly folded from postal mailing, and overall the handwriting is a very light, yet fully readable.
