Written by Lt. J.C. Baker, (Mo. 6 th Cavalry) on two light blue unlined single letter sheets and headed Sadalia Missouri June 28 th 1862 written to his sister, reading in part: I am well and still living the soldiers life. I have been home on recruiting duty. I left camp at Warsaw on the osage river on the first day of May and and returned the 20 th ..,We move our camp every few days we landed here the 22 nd and received orders last night to move camp to Kansas City distance of 90 miles will start in a few days...we have a good deal of scouting to do some fighting but it don’t amount to much this spring I have een in four sharp ingagements (sic) and am in redinese (sic) at all times for another I wish this war Could end so I could live at home in peace with my family but we must whip the rebels first..We have been inspected to day by the inspectors officer he said our regt is in good condition we have 12 companies in our regt. And we have 4 pieces of artillery and I think it would take 4 times our number to whip us we have fought them 2 to one and then they could not whip us we was never drilled to run before we got whiped (sic) the weather is very warm here but I can stand any thing to whip the rebels Union in this regt. Mostly from NY, Ohio, and Illinois all free state men… Condition Normal folds, VG+.
