2 letters (1840-1915), James Turner was born into slavery in Missouri but Turner's father was able to purchase his family's freedom in 1843. He served during the Civil War and ultimately was appointed superintendent of schools for Freed Blacks throughout Missouri. President U. S. Grant appointed Turner Ambassador to Liberia 1871-1878 (making Turner the first African Amer. diplomat to represent the US in a foreign country.) Condition - near fine
