Douglas MacArthur AES with Five First Day Covers, Dating 1942-1971
An autograph endorsement signed by MacArthur on a letter received from Bob James, reading "I am sorry I have no Filipino stamps. Thank you for the photographs. Douglas MacArthur." 1p, measuring 7.25" x 11", n.p., n.d. Bob James' letter has been mounted to a divider sheet along with five first-day covers, relating to General MacArthur and the Second World War. Dated June 13, 1942; April 15, 1942 (x2); June 29, 1943; and January 26, 1971. The covers are mounted to the front and back of the sheet, measuring 8.5" x 11" overall. Varying but expected wear, soiling, and toning to all of the first-day covers. The letter has mail folds. Boldly signed by MacArthur.
Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was a five-star general who, prior to World War II, served as the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. He played a key role in the Allied push into the Pacific theater during the war and received the Medal of Honor for his service. MacArthur formally accepted the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, officially ending the Second World War.
