Half-length ninth plate hand-colored tintype. Full leatherette case. Identified by an early to mid 20th century typed tag.
A simple, yet compelling tintype portrait of Byron Sidney Edmonds (sic) of the 1st Michgian Sharpshooters. The artist chose to pose Edmonds at a slight angle, which combined with his soft, almost wistful expression makes for a memorable photograph.
Edmonds was captured at the Battle of Petersburg and made a prisoner-of-war on June 17th, 1864. He was later confined at the infamous Andersonville Prison, where he died at September 9th, 1864. Edmonds is buried at the National Cemetery in Andersonville, gravesite 8255.
